The cadherin superfamily.

چکیده
The poster provides an overview of the cadherin superfamily, depicting representative molecules for several subfamilies, and displaying the plethora of molecular arrangements characteristic of these molecules (see Commentary by Angst, Marcozzi and Magee on p. 629). Classical cadherins form lateral dimers and typically mediate homophilic adhesion between neighbouring cells and linkage to the actin filament network via their cytoplasmic binding partners *-catenin, &bgr;-catenin and vinculin. Desmosomal cadherins, and VE-cadherin, interact with armadillo family members plakoglobin and/or plakophilins, as well as desmoplakins, to link to the intermediate filament system. Desmosomal cadherin lateral and head-to-head interactions may be homophilic or heterophilic. The adhesive and lateral interactions of other cadherins are less well understood. Very large cadherins, such as FAT family members, may not be involved in adhesion at all, but rather may have a repulsive or sensing role.

P-219: The Role of E-Cadherin Coding Gene (CDH1) in Pathogenesis of Endometriosis
Background: Endometriosis, a gyncological disorder, benign and common cause of infertility, is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma at ectopic locations outside the uterine cavity. Clinical observations have led to the assessment that endometriosis is an invasive disease. Abnormal expression of adhesion molecules such as cadherins is likely to be an important determinant of l...
متن کاملProtocadherins and diversity of the cadherin superfamily.
Recent cadherin studies have revealed that many cadherins and cadherin-related proteins are expressed in various tissues of different multicellular organisms. These proteins are characterized by the multiple repeats of the cadherin motif in their extracellular domains. The members of the cadherin superfamily are divided into two groups: classical cadherin type and protocadherin type. The curren...
متن کاملThe cadherin superfamily in neural development: diversity, function and interaction with other molecules.
Cell-cell interactions are crucial steps for the development of the highly complex nervous system. A variety of cell-cell adhesion molecules of the cadherin superfamily have been found to be expressed in the developing nervous system. Recently it was proposed classic cadherins are involved in various aspects of neural development such as regionalization, brain nucleus formation, neurite outgrow...
متن کاملRegulatory roles of the cadherin superfamily
Charged with the task of providing a molecular link between adjacent cells, the cadherin superfamily consists of over 100 members and populates the genomes of organisms ranging from vertebrates to cniderians. This breadth hints at what decades of research has confirmed: that cadherin-based adhesion and signaling events regulate diverse cellular processes including cell-sorting, differentiation,...
متن کاملCadherin complexity: recent insights into cadherin superfamily function in C. elegans.
Cadherin superfamily proteins mediate cell-cell adhesion during development. The C. elegans embryo is a powerful system for analyzing how cadherins function in highly stereotyped morphogenetic events. In the embryo, the classical cadherin HMR-1 acts along with the Rac pathway and SAX-7/L1CAM during gastrulation. As adherens junctions mature, PAR complex proteins differentially regulate cadherin...
متن کاملInvolvement of members of the cadherin superfamily in cancer.
We review the role of cadherins and cadherin-related proteins in human cancer. Cellular and animal models for human cancer are also dealt with whenever appropriate. E-cadherin is the prototype of the large cadherin superfamily and is renowned for its potent malignancy suppressing activity. Different mechanisms for inactivating E-cadherin/CDH1 have been identified in human cancers: inherited and...
